Where the Nile Slows and Golden
Egypt's southernmost city is also one of its most relaxing, set on a beautiful stretch of the Nile where granite islands, palm groves and golden desert meet. Aswan is home to Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis and reached by boat, as well as the Unfinished Obelisk in the ancient granite quarries and the Aswan High Dam. Colorful Nubian villages line the riverbanks, and Aswan is the starting point for the excursion to the colossal temples of Abu Simbel and for many Nile cruises sailing north to Luxor.

Travel information
Aswan has its own airport, about an hour and a quarter's flight from Cairo, and is also reached by overnight train. Allow one to two days, or longer if you're adding Abu Simbel. Winter is warm and sunny, making October to April the best time to visit, while summer temperatures are among the hottest in Egypt.
